Semantic Identification Attacks on Web Browsing
نویسنده
چکیده
We introduce a Semantic Identification Attack, in which an adversary uses semantic signals about the pages visited in one browsing session to identify other browsing sessions launched by the same user. This attack allows an adversary to determine if two browsing sessions originate from the same user regardless of any measures taken by the user to disguise their browser or network. We use the MSNBC Anonymous Browsing data set, which contains a large set of user visits (labeled by category) to implement such an attack and show that even very coarse semantic information is enough to identify users. We discuss potential countermeasures users can take to defend against this attack.

Improving Tor security against timing and traffic analysis attacks with fair randomization
The Tor network is probably one of the most popular online anonymity systems in the world. It has been built based on the volunteer relays from all around the world. It has a strong scientific basis which is structured very well to work in low latency mode that makes it suitable for tasks such as web browsing. Despite the advantages, the low latency also makes Tor insecure against timing and tr...
متن کاملSemantic Identification of Web Browsing Sessions
We introduce a semantic identification attack, in which an adversary uses semantic signals about the pages visited in one browsing session to identify other browsing sessions launched by the same user. Current user fingerprinting methods fail when a single machine is used by multiple users (e.g., in cybercafes or spaces with public computers) as these methods fingerprint devices, not individual...
متن کاملSequence-order-independent network profiling for detecting application layer DDoS attacks
Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, which are a major threat on the Internet, have recently become more sophisticated as a result of their ability to exploit application-layer vulnerabilities. Most defense methods are designed for detecting DDoS attacks on IP and TCP layers and consequently have difficulty in detecting this new type of DDoS attack. With the profiling of web browsing b...
متن کاملSemWeB: A Semantic Web Browser for Supporting the Browsing of Users Using Semantic and Adaptive Links
Web browsing is a complex activity and in general, users are not guided during browsing. The aim of this research is to support the browsing of users using semantic and adaptive hyperlinks using Semantic Web technologies and personalization methods. In this paper, we propose a novel Semantic Web browser (SemWeB), which uses a behavior-based and an ontology-driven user modeling architecture. In ...
متن کاملMagpie: customizing users’ experiences when browsing on the semantic web
We describe several advanced functionalities of Magpie – a tool that assists users in the interpretation of web resources. Magpie is an extension to Internet Explorer that automatically creates a semantic layer for browsed web pages from a user-selected ontology. Semantic layers are annotations of web pages, with a set of applicable semantic services attached to the annotated items. We argue th...
